Ganglion cysts are benign soft tissue masses which can occur in various parts of the body but are most common in the foot due to friction along joints and tendons. ![Ganglion Cysts]()
Symptoms:
1. Visible lump: Ganglion cysts in the foot often present as a visible lump or bump.
2. Pain or discomfort: Some people may experience pain or discomfort, especially if the cyst presses against a nerve or joint.
3. Changes in size: The cyst may change in size, becoming larger or smaller over time.
4. Tenderness: The area around the cyst may be tender to the touch.
Diagnosis:
Ganglion cysts are usually diagnosed by physical examination and your doctor may also use imaging studies like ultrasound or MRI to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other possible causes of the lump or pain.
Treatment:
1. Observation: If the ganglion cyst is not causing significant pain or interfering with your daily activities, your doctor may recommend simply monitoring it without intervention.
2. Footwear modification: Wearing comfortable and supportive shoes may help alleviate pressure on the cyst.
3. Aspiration: Draining the fluid from the cyst with a needle (aspiration) may be attempted to reduce its size and relieve symptoms. However, cysts often have a tendency to recur after aspiration.
4. Corticosteroid injection: Injecting a corticosteroid medication into the cyst may help reduce inflammation and provide relief.
5. Surgery: Surgical removal of the cyst may be considered if other conservative measures are ineffective, and the cyst continues to cause pain or discomfort.
